Garry Herron

Chief Business & Economics Advisor

A lifelong resident of Southern California and a UCLA graduate, Garry Herron's experience with business and economics spans a first career in big business and a second career in small business. Now retired from both enterprises he volunteers his time to help others, especially students enrolled at local institutions of public higher education. He has found that combining four decades' worth of experiences in business with research on how national and global economics impact business success is key to helping college students transition from education to career.

Upon earning his BA degree in Mathematics and Computer Science Garry took a software development position with Burroughs (now Unisys) Corporation.  Later and soon after finishing his MBA program he entered a career of sales, consulting and management with IBM Corporation. Upon leaving IBM, he founded and ran a small business that guided large corporations and state and local governments in making business continuity preparations that would maintain the integrity of business operations during and after a natural or human-caused disaster or other crisis.

Garry's business leadership style has always been centered on the concept that a client's investment decisions are guided by how well those investments support the attainment of business goals. His client relationships have been based on this theme: Business success depends upon inside-the-enterprise actions that will adapt to the myriad of economic forces external to the enterprise. Recognizing and giving due consideration to the economic environment during development of business actions is key to achieving the highest level of success.

Nobody knows a business or other organization as well as its own leadership does.  But the business exists in an external environment constantly changing in ways beyond the leader's control. Changes spawn new, different and provocative ideas. History shows that good leadership is made better when the leader is ready to adapt to those elements of the outside environment that are new, different and provocative.
